Discovering Multi-instrumentalist Hollistic and His Latest Release “Calm”

Introducing ANGVIS’s latest addition, Hollistic, whose musical prowess has been showcased in his newest release, “Calm”. Hailing from Brighton, UK, Hugo Hollis, under the alias Hollistic, has swiftly mastered music production, drawing from his extensive background as a skilled guitarist. With “Calm”, Hollistic transports listeners into a realm of nostalgia and serenity, akin to the comforting embrace of a warm fireplace on a gloomy day. Curious about his creative journey, we sat down with Hollistic to delve into his inspirations, and aspirations for the year ahead.

What is the inspiration and meaning behind your latest release “Calm”?

Calm was born during a rainy day in London in autumn of 2021. I was in my best friend’s flat, sat on his beanie bag looking out of the window at the rain and people passing by with their umbrellas. You know that peaceful feeling you get when you’re with one of your loved ones? Well that and the rainy view was basically the inspiration for the tune.

Your music has unbeatable groove yet is so relaxing – what influences your sound?

So much! It’s almost impossible to name them all, but for this song I think there’s influence from Four Tet, Burial, and Maribou State. I’m a big fan of dance music, so I think that’s where my obsession with groove comes from.

And tell us about your guitar expertise! Do you incorporate it into your music? Do you play any other instruments?

Guitar is where my musical journey started! I began playing at 14 and instantly fell in love. It was one of the few things I could do for hours and completely lose track of time. In fact, I once flooded the house because I was running a bath and completely forgot about it for 3 hours.. My folks were not happy.

I often include guitar in my music, but never in my DJ sets. Having said this, I have started another project with a singer / songwriter so playing live may become more likely in the future!

Very neat, it’s always so captivating when a producer plays a musical instrument as well. At 26 you had heart surgery. How did this event impact your musical journey and outlook?

It was the catalyst for everything. I was working as a software developer in London at the time and didn’t really enjoy my job. But the surgery really put my own mortality into perspective, which made it crystal clear to me that I had to take a leap of faith and pursue my music passion. So a couple of days after the procedure, I handed in my notice. I would probably still be working there if it wasn’t for the surgery, so I’m actually really grateful it happened!

Wow, that’s quite a story! So what can we expect from Hollistic in the coming year?

Lots and lots more music! I don’t want to jinx anything, so won’t name any names, but I’ve had some interest from some of my favourite labels recently, so fingers crossed! Got some cool gigs lined up too (Shout out to everyone coming to El Dorada Festival this year 💛!) but I’m always looking for more. So if you want me to come play at your event or even at your house party – hit me up on Instagram (I’m pretty affordable 😊)!
